Meet our St. Thomas-St. John Insular Superintendent

Stefan Jürgen

Upon graduating from the Charlotte Amalie High School in 1991, Stefan attended Clark Atlanta University, in Atlanta Ga., where he majored in Social Work and English.  After graduating from Clark Atlanta University, Stefan began his teaching career in a youth rehabilitation center in Atlanta, Georgia.  Stefan returned home and received several job offers but the one that caught his immediate attention was an opportunity to contribute in building a new alternative education program for at-risk youth.  The challenge of designing a new school brought Stefan tremendous excitement and a deeper sense of purpose.  That school was called: New Horizon Alternative Program (aka New Horizons School, Addelita Cancryn Junior High School Alternative Program - name adjusted over the years to suit program modifications prior to closing). Mr. Jürgen refers to New Horizons as the backdrop to a very rewarding and successful career in the field of education.  Mr. Jürgen earned a Masters of Arts in Education: dual concentration: Guidance & Counseling and Administration & Supervision.  In 2003, the St. Thomas/St. John School District was in need of an alternative program with expanded services to include grades 7-12. Mr. Jürgen was charged with the responsibility of establishing program structure and leading the Edith L. Williams Alternative Academy (EWAA).  Mr. Jürgen has served as Program Manager and Director of Alternative Schools and Programs, Assistant Principal of J. Antonio Jarvis Elementary School, Addelita Cancryn Junior High School and the Charlotte Amalie High School. Mr. Jürgen is extremely proud to have served as Principal of both high schools on St. Thomas (Charlotte Amalie High School and Ivanna Eudora Kean High School respectively).

After spending 23 years as an educator in the St. Thomas/St. John School District, Mr. Jürgen considers himself a “Champion” of our public schools.  In his new role as Superintendent, he plans to hold all stakeholders to high standards so that we provide students with more opportunities to learn, grow, create and achieve.  Mr. Jürgen understands that this can only occur if students, teachers, support staff, and administrators are motivated to produce quality work that translates to fostering individual growth and improved student achievement. Collaboration is indeed an essential and powerful tool that fuses; good ideas, sound strategies and the strengths of others together to positively impact the end product.  Working together works!
